Every cultivar we ship is recreated and stabilised by our genetics team before it reaches a pack. This page sets out how that is done โ€” phenotype hunting, selection, backcrossing, germination QC โ€” and why an unstable line costs a New Zealand grower more than it costs almost anyone else.

What this claim is, and what it is not

We do not claim to have invented the cultivars in this catalogue. Gorilla Glue, Northern Lights, White Widow and the rest were originated by breeders who are named on the strain pages where we know who they were โ€” and where we do not know, the field stays empty rather than being filled in.

What we claim is narrower and checkable: we take those cultivars, hunt the population for the phenotype that matches the profile the name promises, and fix it across generations until a pack grows uniformly. That is what a stabilised line is. It is a less dramatic story than inventing something, and it is the one that actually determines what comes out of your tent.

The process

Phenotype hunting

A cultivar is not one plant. Pop a large population of any well-known line and you get a spread โ€” some finishing a fortnight apart, some throwing the terpene profile the name promises and some not. The work starts by growing that population out under one set of conditions and recording what each plant actually does: internode spacing, structure, flowering time, resin, and how the smell develops through the last three weeks.

Selection

From that population, most plants are culled. What survives is the group that matched the target profile โ€” finished when it should, tasted like it should, and held structure without staking. Selection is against recorded figures rather than a favourite plant, because the point is a line that repeats, and a plant chosen on impression does not repeat.

Backcrossing and stabilisation

Selected plants are crossed back to the parent line across successive generations โ€” BX1, BX2, BX3 โ€” until the population expresses evenly rather than approximately. This is the slow part, and it is the part that gets skipped. An F1 will grow you something impressive; a stabilised line grows you the same thing next season.

Germination QC

Seed lots are germination-tested batch by batch against our 95% guarantee, and trait consistency is checked with a grow-out before a line ships. If a batch drifts from the profile it was selected for, it does not go out. The guarantee behind that is on our returns page: seeds that fall short are replaced, same strain and pack size, free of charge.

Why instability costs more in a New Zealand season

In a long, dry season an inconsistent pack is an annoyance: the slow plants finish late and you harvest them late. Here the calendar is less forgiving. New Zealand runs from 34ยฐS to 47ยฐS, the autumn arrives wet in the north and frost-bound in the south, and a plant that needs three more weeks in April usually does not get them. Stability is what turns a flowering time on a strain page into a date you can actually plan around.

A three-week flowering spread

The expensive one here. If half a pack finishes in week nine and the rest wants week twelve, the tail runs into April โ€” a damp April in Northland and the Bay of Plenty, and a frost-bound one in Otago and Southland. A stable line lets you plan a harvest date. An unstable one makes the weather decide it.

Off-type plants in the pack

Two of ten come out structurally wrong โ€” stretchier, looser, a different smell entirely. In a tent with four sites that is half your season spent on a plant you did not choose to grow.

Terpene expression that wanders

The same name producing citrus in one plant and something flat and green in the next. Terpene profile is genetic before it is anything else, and an unfixed line has not settled on one.

Yield that swings across the pack

Per-plant output varying by a factor of two from the same packet makes it impossible to size a grow. You cannot plan a room, a light, or a nutrient budget around a number that is really a range.

Stress reversal under pressure

Insufficiently fixed feminised lines throw male flowers when stressed โ€” and a New Zealand spring supplies stress readily, in the form of a cold snap after a warm fortnight. One reversal pollinates the tent.

No repeatability season to season

You find a plant that works, order the same seeds next year, and get something else. Everything you learned about feeding and timing that cultivar stops applying.

What a stabilised pack gives you

A date you can plan around. When a pack finishes together, the flowering time on the strain page becomes a planning input rather than an average. That is what lets you work backwards from a frost date instead of hoping.

A repeatable result. What you learn about feeding, training and timing a cultivar carries into the next run, because the next pack grows the same plant.

Flavour that holds. Terpene expression is fixed in the line before it is influenced by your cure. A stabilised pack smells the way the name says across every plant in it.
